MongoDB Atlas pricing, price hikes and cheaper alternatives
MongoDB Atlas (mongodb.com) is a database platform. Dedicated clusters are billed hourly per data-bearing node (three-node minimum), with storage above the default, backups and outbound data billed on top; Flex is capped at $30 a month.. Free plan: M0 is free forever with 512 MB storage, shared resources and up to 100 ops/sec; its page says it is for learning and exploring, and no production ban is stated..
What MongoDB Atlas costs
- 10 GB app: $178.40/mo (3 nodes x $0.08/h x 730 h = $175.20; Cloud Backups 10 GB x $0.14 = $1.40; 20 GB out x $0.09 = $1.80; total $178.40. The 10 GB default storage per node covers the data. Flex is out (5 GB cap) and M0 is out (512 MB). The pricing page's 'starts at $56.94/month' implies $0.078/h, which would give $174.02.)
- Side project: free (Free M0 holds 250 MB (512 MB cap), needs about 0.2 ops/sec (cap 100), and outgoing data is not charged on Free tiers. Its 'learning and exploring' wording is not a production ban, so the price is 0.)
- 100 GB app: no public price (Not priced. Partial before storage: 3 x M20 at $0.20/h x 730 h x 3 nodes = $438.00, backups 100 GB x $0.14 = $14.00, 200 GB out x $0.09 = $18.00, total $470.00. Storage above the 20 GB default is charged on the full 100 GB per node, but no per-GB rate is published on the pages checked.)
Plan compared: Dedicated M10 as a three-node replica set at AWS rates (low end of the published ranges, assumed US), 10 GB storage, 7-d. Every price is the monthly cost, at list prices on monthly billing, of running the same app database in a US region: a 10 GB production app (the headline), a 250 MB side project and a 100 GB growing app, each with a fixed number of reads, writes and developers, on the cheapest self-serve plan that fully covers it. Free plans count when they cover the whole job and allow production use; trials and sign-up credits do not.

Cheaper alternatives to MongoDB Atlas
At a 10 GB production app, MongoDB Atlas costs $178.40/mo. 4 database platforms cost less:
- Firebase: $6.36/mo (Blaze pay-as-you-go, Cloud Firestore Standard edition, Iowa (us-central1), default on-demand prices, after free quotas)
- Amazon RDS: $13.98/mo (On-demand Single-AZ db.t4g.micro PostgreSQL, 730 hours a month, 20 GiB gp3 storage.)
- Neon: $23.75/mo (Launch plan at monthly on-demand list prices (no annual prices stated).)
- Supabase: $25.25/mo (Pro plan ($25/mo) with one Micro compute instance (covered by the $10 credit) and 10 GB of disk.)

Pricing page: mongodb.com/pricing. Prices last checked Oct 16, 2026. Built from the official pricing page, the Atlas cluster-cost and data-transfer docs (ranges, low end used) and PricingSaaS, which shows no verified increase. No news search ran because the web search budget was used up, so the change list rests on PricingSaaS alone, and growth stays unpriced because the per-GB storage rate is not published on the pages checked.
